Proud versus Happy

I have an issue with the word 'proud'. As a matter of fact I stopped using it completely quite few years ago now, and instead, I've been using the word 'happy'.
Usually when we or someone important to us achieves something we say: " I'm proud of myself", or "I'm proud of you", or "you should be proud of..."

So does it mean that if we don't perform to our highest standard (for whatever reasons) it's time to be ashamed?!... As shame is the opposite of pride.

What about our children for example? Yesterday we were proud of them and today, because they did something we disapprove, we're ashamed and trying to instal some guilt in them, without any consideration of the damage we're doing? Just because we're not proud any more?

What happens next very often, especially when we feel really proud of someone or something, is the falling down. The higher we climb carrying our pride the further we can fall. I'm sure a lot of us have experienced it to some degree at some points in our lives. And it's not a good feeling at all!

Try to say these two words to yourself (even in your thoughts) one by one and notice how each of them makes you feel; "happy" does make me feel good straight away, while "proud" makes me feel stiffed inside.

To summarize it, I'm very happy that I've expressed my opinion on this subject -:)
